Understanding Comics Reading & Response | Week 6

   - Does each frame represent a single moment in time in a comic? Why or why not? What about in video?

No. In a comic, time can be represented in multiple ways depending on what the artist wants to show. One frame, for example, can have multiple dialogues happening with different characters present. This doesn't mean every character is speaking at the same time. It takes time for you to read each speech bubble, therefore the duration for each word in the frame differs. Figures are arranged from left to right and as we read what they're saying, each person has a "time slot".

The same goes for video. There are so many movies filmed with a single shot. All the action, movement, and dialogue show the progression of time.

- In comics, time and space are “one and the same.” How so? Contrast these strategies with how artists represent space and time in film and video.

Time and space are "one and the same" in comics because as we read the comic, our eyes and moving through both space and time. Each frame has dialogue and our mind creates certain pauses between words because it's what we're familiar with. The frames can also differ in location, therefore as we read we "move" around in the space.

Artists represent space and time in film and video in different ways. They use multiple shots in a scene to show space. They can use wide angles and pan in different directions to show depth in a room.

- How do artists represent space in moving image? How do we know the space is larger?

Usually the artist would show multiple shots of the room in a moving image.  We would know how large the space would be with a wide angle shot of the room.

- How does an artist elicit claustrophobia on film or video? Provide 2 examples from film or video of how large or small spaces are communicated to the audience.

The artist can elicit claustrophobia by the use of framing and having zoomed in/ extreme close ups of the subject.

In this example, the artist shows that the space is large by walking around the space filming in a continuous shot. We get the sense of depth found in the store.
