Project 2 Storyboard Ideas | Week 6

So far I haven't stuck to an idea I like for this project. I have mostly been thinking about interesting close knit locations where I would be able to shoot this project. My first thoughts were the smaller areas I had to work with in my apartment:

-laundry room
-bathroom
-closet
-hallway

But so far I think it would be interesting to walk around my neighborhood and see if I find an area that stands out to me. I like the idea of shooting outdoors.

Dana Hatchett- Launching the Imagination

Nike made an advertisement in the past when all of the top athletes endorsed by Nike are shown to work really hard and come out victorious at the end. The camera shows all of the athletes struggling in sweat and then holding a trophy at the end. The commercial ends with the NIke Swoosh mark logo. In order to get all of the top athletes, Nike made the commercial upbeat and the duration of the clips go by really fast adding a bit of excitement, but getting to have the chance to show all of the top athletes sponsored by Nike

Causality is when a chain of events are caused by each other and then a conclusion can be reached of what happened.

In the Titanic after Jack dies, Rose is on the boat that rescues the survivors. Rose looks distant and sad. She doesn't say anything but the audience knows the pain she is in. In Perks of Being a Wallflower, Charlie, the main character is in distress near the end with his mental state. The part doesn't include talking, but silence is used to convey the dark message.

Launching the Imagination - Chapter 14 | Week 6

 What is causality?

 - Casuality is a chain of events that helps construct a story. The beginning events lead up to the middle, and the middle events lead up to the finale in a traditional narrative.

Define narrative compression and give an example of a tv or online commercial that uses this technique.

- Narrative compression is when you have to edit down the story you want to tell due to time constraints, but have to make sure your narrative grabs the audience's attention and is clearly received by the audience.

- An example of a commercial that uses this technique is one about Orbit Gum. In this commercial, they have only 16 seconds to sell their product. The short narrative shows a man and a talking pizza arguing because he refuses to eat her. They use the soft-sell approach because they focus on humor but at the end of the commercial it all ties together with their "Just Brushed Clean Feeling" motto.

Briefly describe and give examples (not from the book) of two non-narrative approaches you have seen in film or literature.

- One example of a rhetorical non-narrative approach can be found in this commercial for an LG Oled TV. The 55 second commercial has no formal story line. It shows scenes of a zoomed in eye, people in a theater, people stargazing, and a woman that seems to turn into a whale? None of these scenes are linked with each other.

- An example of an abstract non-narrative approach can be found here. He is one of my classmates in my Video Art class. His montage project was a series of close up shots of water being boiled, falling in a bucket, inside a blender etc. There was no formal narrative.

Dana Hatchett- Storyboard Ideas

Right now I am not really sure what direction to take with this upcoming film. I was thinking about doing something with glass dolls and making it have a dark tone. I'm not sure what the glass dolls would be doing. But I think that they are unsettling to look at. Another idea I have is painting someone's face and having them make facial gestures. The message right now is not really clear. Another idea that I thought of doing is something that involves black paint being poured profusely in a small space on someone or something.  I am not sure where this project is going yet but I am looking forward to starting it.

Project 2 Ideas - Crystal Giraldo

I still haven't come close to putting a solid idea together for this second project, but I think I want it to relate to the way I see myself and my place in the world around me. At the moment, I'm trying to figure what it is I want to portray in my work as an artist (or pretty much just trying to figure out who it is that I am or the type of person I want to be.) I was thinking about executing one of the ideas I had for the first project. The one where I am fresh out of the shower, getting ready for the day and doing the whole self-scrutiny thing as I look at myself in the mirror. Until I come to realization that I perfectly fine the way I am. Another idea I had is to set the scene at my little kitchenette table, with either me or someone else as an actor, as the central character. There are two separate shots being shown simultaneously on the screen (these will be the two separate ends of the table) and one person on one side of the screen is the reality of the situation and the same person is going to be shown on the other side of the screen but they are going to represent the character's subconscious. There is going to be an interaction between the reality character and their subconscious... but I'm not sure what it is going to be yet.

Chapter 14 Reading Response - Hattie Mallot

     1. What is causality?
- Causality is a chain of events, with one event causing another, and then that event causing another and so on.

      2. Define narrative compression and give an example of a tv or online commercial that uses this technique.
- Narrative Compression describes the various ways to make a narrative make an impression on an audience within a limited amount of time. Usually relates to commercials. I think my favorite ad is a public service announcement against sexual harassment that was made by an Alumnus (Ketan Rana) of Whistling Woods International Institute of Film, Fashion, and Media. The title of his video is "Dekh Le". The ad shows several instances of women being predatorily stared at by men, whether they are aware of it or not. As these men stare at the women, reflective surfaces begin to block their views, showing them what their own gaze looks like. Despite the fact that there are no english words until the end of the ad, the message is still very clear.

       3. Briefly describe and give examples (not from the book) of two non-narrative approaches you have seen in film or literature.
- Uh...let's see...non-narrative...uh, any commercial that just gives you information counts. So, commercials for children's toys, like Floam, or for medicine, like Head-On! Apply directly to the forehead!

Chapter 14, Launching the Imagination Response_ Rebecca Shalloway

What is causality?

The chain of events and causes that conclude is called a casualty.

Define narrative compression and give an example of a tv or online commercial that uses this technique.

Narrative compression is when duration of a commercial is short so the ad must immediately command attention, make a favorable impression, and influence consumer behavior.

The Old Spice Commerical "The Man Your Man Can Smell Like"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owGykVbfgUE   commands my attention right away because of the use of a shirtless attractive man. It makes a favorable impression because it is almost satirical and uses humor to keep me interested in the product. Then it influences consumer behavior because the entire commercial is attractive and why not be more attractive when you use this product?

- Briefly describe and give examples (not from the book) of two non-narrative approaches you have seen in film or literature.

In this commerical https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOksW_NabEk they use a rhetorical approach to convey facts through metaphor. The Jelly Beans are used not only as a unit of measurement but are a tangible porportion to put things in perspective for teh viewer.

In Jaws, the filmaker uses the categorical approach by never using the full depiction of a shark. Instead, he implies a shark in the water though rough waters and close ups.

ch14_reading-CM

- Causality is a chain of events, where one event leads to another one.
- Narrative compression is used a lot in TV commercials, in which ads must make a good impression in about 15 seconds. Duration, editing, framing, and narration are critical. For example, the 15-second ads (could be a movie trailer) that appear on YouTube when you want to watch a video.
- I was watching a movie the other day in which a character goes to the past in order to change the future (and present). In the movie, you could see both present and past happening together, going back and forth. The movie ended with the present disappearing and a different past shown.
- In horror movies, you can see that somebody is getting killed, but then you realize it was just an illusion inside the character's head. Nobody got killed yet.

Chapter 14 Reading - Crystal Giraldo

Causality is a chain of events that a traditional narrative follows until a conclusion or meaning is met; this is the basic cause and effect sequence. A narrative compression is pretty simple to understand. It is usually how ads are designed in order to grab attention, appeal to its audiences' emotions and make an impression, within small amount of time (usually between 15-60 seconds).
There is an Extra gum commercial that makes me tear up every time I watch it that uses this technique. It starts off with a father and young daughter on a train chewing gum and the dad makes a little origami crane out of the gum and gives it to his daughter. The commercial follows the two characters up until the daughter seems to be moving out of the house or going away to college (with the dad giving her these little origami cranes throughout the years). The dad drops a box he is packing into the car and out fall hundreds of little metallic cranes that his daughter had kept all those years. In about 45 seconds, the audience experiences the bond that this father and daughter shared as she was growing up.
A nonnarrative is a form of sequential art that has no clear storyline; the three different types are categorical, rhetorical and abstract. A big example of this is informational literature. Any sort of pamphlets/manuals/books that provide information on a certain topics are factual and do not have a defined narrative. Some documentaries and commercials (topics related to health, political campaigns, etc.) are the film versions of this. Although there are sub-narratives in them, their purpose is usually to be a source of information o the audience. Poems can also be a form of nonnarrative in literature. A lot of poems communicate emotions and ideas without necessarily telling a story.

Project 1 Critique Reflection | Week 5

I was pleased with the responses that I received during the first critique. There are a few things that I would improve on, but for the most part I was very satisfied with how my project turned out.

In multiple frames you could see my lead pencil, which was distracting. It's unfortunate that I didn't realize this before I uploaded all my pictures onto FCPX. I can definitely go back and Photoshop the items out, so its an easy fix to this problem. A few of my classmates had trouble with understanding the message of my video. While I love leaving my art up for interpretation, with this narrative project I think it's essential that I don't leave the audience confused. I would have definitely elaborated with the ending, adding more to the story.

ASP - Critique reflection

I was pleased by how my piece was received by the class during critique; and by how the class understood the ideas I was trying to get across. The criticism I received was also very beneficial, and helped me to narrow down things that I need to work on, such as focusing on the fine details to make sure the project is clean and presentable. I was worried about the pacing of my piece, as well as whether the shapes would be identifiable, and while these things were mentioned, it was not as bad as I expected it to be.

Critique 1 Reflection - Hattie Mallot

My piece was more well received than I thought it would be. And I was surprised that people got pretty close to what my piece was talking about. I would have thought the pacing of my video would be critiqued, but I guess it wasnt really of note. I also thought that my shots might bother people since there were times when the picture I was drawing wasn't visible, but people seemed to like my over-the-shoulder shot as it added a human touch. If I were to do this project again, I would take into mind the style of the drawing itself, the amount of space taken up on the paper, the rest of the body of the drawing, and the realism of the process portrayed in the video.

Critique 1 Reflection - Crystal Giraldo

I'm happy to say that I enjoyed our first critique experience as a class a lot more than I expected to. Once my piece played the first couple of times, my nerves settled down and I was excited to talk about my project. It seemed as though everyone was able to was able to get the overall concept, about the sock just wanting to do whatever it wants to do. However, because of the way I chose to show the protagonist sock (colorful and different-looking) people understood that as the sock being destroyed because she was different. The idea I wanted to come across more was that she just wanted to escape her dull, sock destiny. Although the shooting for this project was really challenging, I know I could have done a better job at camera/angle stability so there isn't as much shakiness. I could have also edited the pictures so they were more consistent in color. I'm glad to have gotten the constructive feedback that I did from the class, it will definitely help when working on the projects to come.

critiqueResponse_Project01-CM

As I said in critique, I did not feel like making an artwork, but I liked the fact that the class got the main idea of my stop-motion: rebirth. I knew that there were some pictures in which the idea was not clear at all (because of the interface, backgrounds, text around the picture, etc) but I still used to show diversity in video games, specially in computer graphics. Since not too many people in the class play video games, I was surprised about their comments. The time limit was like an issue to me because I wanted to show so many things in so little time. Now I have a better understanding of how art-related major students see an artwork.

ExtraCredit_ArtistTalk-CM

On Monday, September 14th 2015 my class of digital imaging attended an artist talk that took place in FAB. The artist name was Steve Rowell, who used photography as medium, and aiming his artwork towards political an governmental organizations. I was surprised that he got permission from the British government to shoot a photo of a military basecamp. Sometimes he was not be allowed to take pictures of government buildings, such as many in Washington D.C., for which he said that even if he was behind the bushes taking pictures, there would be a police officer (an undercover one) asking him to leave... Something that I thought was missing in Rowell's talk was the program(s) he used to enhance his pictures, like what digital methods he used to make the photos look in high quality, with good lighting, showing some details that you cannot notice when using, for example the phone camera... The artist was an old guy, so he probably only learned what he needed and that's it... Overall, it was interesting how he presented his artwork and his topic, and the way he talked about the history of those photographs.

Response to Project 1 Critique- Dana Hatchett

I felt like the critique was helpful in terms of  how to tell a story and how to improve my work. The critique taught me that I needed to guide the viewers along while watching my film instead of looking at it from a distance (which made the film seem impersonal at times). Overall I was satisfied with my work. My thoughts after the critique made me wish that I worked on better transitions. I also wanted the message to be clearer and less confusing to the viewers. I know next time what to do and what to improve on to better my work.

The Scale of Nature

Though it is a common sentiment that we are all, at a very basic level, a part of the natural world which surrounds us, it is increasingly uncommon for individuals to connect or identify with nature. As such, it is easy to miss the simple beauty of the world around us, especially the minutia which are so ingrained in the condition of life that they become neglected and forgotten. The extraordinary abilities of animals to breathe in water, or fly; the power of the wind, an invisible force, the changing of seasons, or even just how diverse the children of nature are: these simple things are incredible, to the point of being inexplicable by any who do not study these things. And yet, they are ignored, neglected, expected, because of our indifference, they become ephemeral.

Good Night Studio

When the sun goes down, after long day of working in the studio, everything on my desk comes alive. The tangled mess of objects that are a result of 4 hour creativity sessions are misplaced from being used.

Each book, pencil, piece of paper and journal have a designated place. My desk, similar to a home, houses these objects overnight. Good Night studio is a play off of the children’s book entitled “Good Night Moon” . The objects are colorful and playful which contrast with the structure of their designated place.

My desk is my humble abode. The ritual of cleaning up after I work is crucial to my creative process. It helps me focus to come into a new day with a fresh start.

As a graphic designer, the materials I use expand beyond the computer. Much of my inspiration is from physical objects and the world around me, just like any artist. Each object on my desk is crucial to my artistic process. My sketch books weed out ideas, while the art history books serve as a reference. The markers block out color and pencils define the line. Covered with my mission and overall idea are my post it notes. Tea helps me push through the night with extreme focus. After a long day's works, by me and my objects, we say good night by getting ready for the morning.

Project 1 & Artist Statement | Week 5

Project 01 Stop Motion Video | Artist Statement

“Curiosity” By: Vanessa Puello

My stop motion video is titled “Curiosity”. 384 images were used in order to create my animation. I knew I wanted to incorporate drawings when I was brainstorming ideas, so this led me to experiment with pencil and charcoal drawings during the beginning stages of my project. After multiple trial and error runs, I finally stuck with this “puppet” idea. I decided to use a pencil and started drawing the figures and shapes that I knew I wanted to use in my video on multiple sheets of paper. I cut out each individual shape and made sure I organized them well while I was working. I drew numerous body parts facing multiple angles in order to create the woman and man figures. I also drew multiple oval shapes that represented the “bubbles” these figures came out of. I used my desk in my bedroom as a background, since it was a stable and plain surface that would not distract from the shapes. I also used the natural lighting in my bedroom and did not edit the images.

I chose to use my drawings in this stop motion project because it amazes me how artists can take a simple canvas, blank piece of paper, or any material and animate it with their visions. With any work that I do, I automatically visualize how I want to manipulate the medium that I use in my mind as I draw. Not only can artists create beautiful images, but their work can also leave powerful messages. Halfway through my process, I was inspired to send a message with my video. As the woman figure leans in to see what is inside the cracked bubble, a male figure appears before her. He leaps out of the bubble and with his fist; he destroys the woman’s body. I find it disgusting that there is still violence in the world, especially towards women and children. What makes me angry is having to feel fear or anxiety whenever I am alone at night outside or if I’m in a bad neighborhood. As a child, I was taught to always be cautious of strangers, especially of men if I ever found myself alone. Just because I am a girl, automatically I appear weaker than men. I wish we lived in a world where you don’t have to be scared to take a walk outside alone at night, or have to worry about being kidnapped.
