Launching Imagination Reading Summary-Rebecca Shalloway

Aspects and Elements of Time (Chapter Thirteen)

Time is an element of an artwork that can be found in all types of art from the typical sound, photo and video to design and sculpture. An understanding of time is essential to a piece of work. For example in Theodore Gericault's "Raft of the Medusa" the composition is of a distinct moment in time (the most dramatic and visually informative scene). The same happens with photography. It would make sense to capture the actual explosion not a few seconds before of after it to show what happened. This is what Sam Shere did in "Explosion of the Hindenburg". In film it is structured by four basic units: frame, shot, scene and sequence. There are four types of relationships between shots and they include: graphic relationships, spatial relationships, temporal relationships and rhythmic relationships. One example that uses all four relationships is Alfred Hitchcock's suspenseful sequence from the movie "Birds".
