Chapter 14, Launching the Imagination Response_ Rebecca Shalloway

What is causality?

The chain of events and causes that conclude is called a casualty.

Define narrative compression and give an example of a tv or online commercial that uses this technique.

Narrative compression is when duration of a commercial is short so the ad must immediately command attention, make a favorable impression, and influence consumer behavior.

The Old Spice Commerical "The Man Your Man Can Smell Like"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owGykVbfgUE   commands my attention right away because of the use of a shirtless attractive man. It makes a favorable impression because it is almost satirical and uses humor to keep me interested in the product. Then it influences consumer behavior because the entire commercial is attractive and why not be more attractive when you use this product?

- Briefly describe and give examples (not from the book) of two non-narrative approaches you have seen in film or literature.

In this commerical https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BOksW_NabEk they use a rhetorical approach to convey facts through metaphor. The Jelly Beans are used not only as a unit of measurement but are a tangible porportion to put things in perspective for teh viewer.

In Jaws, the filmaker uses the categorical approach by never using the full depiction of a shark. Instead, he implies a shark in the water though rough waters and close ups.
